This course is an ideal way to explore a wide variety of artistic methods and media, learn new artistic skills, and discover what you enjoy most. Students work across the different disciplines of:
– Painting

– Sculpture

– Drawing

– Printmaking

Throughout the course, students will have a chance to improve observational drawing skills, experiment with sculptural techniques, develop fundamental painting skills and have an engaging introduction to printmaking. This Beginner course is aimed at those who are looking to step into the art world and gain a basic understanding of different practices. You will be able to develop new skills, experiment with materials and explore creative ideas. This course is a great way to try out different mediums before committing to one of our specialised courses.

This course is suitable for students at our Beginner level.

  • Beginner

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

Other course levels include:

  • Beginner +

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium, but still follow a structured path with guidance from the tutor.

  • Intermediate

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.

These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.

  • Advanced

Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.

Our Advanced courses include our Masterclasses.

All attendees must be aged 18 or over.

All materials will be provided.  For the creative sessions you might be asked to or want to bring in some stuff of your own. The tutor will discuss this with you. Please bring an apron or an old shirt to protect your clothes!

During your Sculpture module, if you work in clay without an armature, you will be offered the opportunity to have your clay pieces fired.  This is optional and additional hollowing and firing costs will apply. Hollowing is necessary before a piece can be fired.

Firing Fees: £15 for a small figure; £20 for a portrait head; £20 for a large figure

Hollowing fees: £15 for a small figure; £20 for a portrait head; £20 for a large figure
