JAMES BLAND

English figurative artist

born in Grimsby

1st prize winner, The Winsor & Newton Oil Painters Awards 2013

My work incorporates diverse approaches to style and subject but begins always in drawing and painting from life. My aim at every stage is to find an image that resonates through simplicity of colour and form.

Though some of my paintings are done quickly, most spend a long time in the studio looking for the right combination of shape, pose and composition. They may be cut down, re-stretched, scraped back or painted over. Surface texture – the byproduct of lots of changes of mind – is something I enjoy.

I also like the idea of painting as a way of telling stories and find inspiration in literature as well as visual art. Some influences include Piero della Francesca,Rembrandt, Keith Vaughan, Georges Braque, Dorothea Tanning, Euan Uglow,Matisse, Balthus, Jan Svankmayer, Ana Maria Pacheco and Marcel Proust.
