Join us for this fun 1-day introductory taster in Etching. Etching is an intaglio printmaking process where the drawing or design is created using acid into a metal plate in order to hold the ink. In this course you will be using a zinc plate, concentrating on achieving hard ground (fine line). You will learn to manipulate and enhance your image with a tonal monoprint technique for dramatic effect.

Throughout this Taster Day you will learn:

  • How to design and plan your zinc printing plate
  • Use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
  • Apply a hard ground and draw with an etching needle
  • Apply a ‘stop-out’ varnish and etch in saline sulphate mordant
  • Ink up and proof the etched image
  • Use a professional printing press
  • The possibilities of Etching and creating images
  • The range of other printmaking processes on offer at Art Academy

This popular course is a fantastic introduction to the Print Room, while exploring how to make exciting images through printmaking. Once you have completed the course, we recommend signing up to one of our evening or weekend Printmaking courses to learn a new technique and further develop your printmaking skills.

Beginner

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

All materials will be provided for this course.
