Portrait Sculpture for All

TUTOR: Anthony Waters

FEE: £370

LOCATION: Bankside Campus, 185 Park Street, SE1 9SH

This engaging one-week course will guide you through the fundamental techniques that are used to create a Portrait Sculpture. The skills you learn throughout the week will help you understand how to examine the head from all angles. You will use drawings to assist the sculptural process and by observing the model throughout the week, you will gradually build on your piece and learn how to:

  • Use modelling tools and calipers
  • Use a  measurement system to set up the form of the head
  • Use the underlying structure of the skull to help with the form
  • Look at the 3/4 profiles of the head
  • Capture the models characteristics by indicating features of the face
  • Create light and shadow
  • Add in details and identify what needs to be improved

By the end of the course you would have a finished life-size portrait sculpture which you have the option of leaving to be hollowed and fired (this incurs additional costs).

Please note that this course will be happening at our new Bankside Campus!

Anthony Waters has a diploma in sculpture from Heatherley’s College and in 2016 graduated from the Art Academy Certificate programme. Previous to this he worked as a graphic designer and seeks to make work which crosses the boundaries between 2D & 3D, figurative and abstract, exploring materiality and the processes involved in producing sculptural work.

He won the prize for best non-member newcomer for the FACE exhibition, Society of Portrait Sculptors in 2016 and was a joint winner of the Surrey Sculpture prize the same year. expression. She explores material such as concrete, fabric, metal, clay, human hair or ready made objects. By placing familiar objects in an unfamiliar form or space she overwhelms the viewer with a sense of entrapment or unease.
