Printmaking: Mezzotint

COURSE DATES: Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st April 2024

TUTOR: Ilaria Rosselli del Turco

TIMES: 10:00am – 5:00pm

FEE: £180

LOCATION: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR

This workshop is open to beginners and experienced printmakers who want to try out the mezzotint process. Mezzotint is a technique that produces tonal images with deep blacks and soft greys and is particularly suited to express a dramatic tonal range: if you love black and white photography or charcoal drawing you might very much enjoy learning this technique. You will be working on a pre-rocked copper plate with the aim of obtaining a finished print by the end of the workshop.

We will explore how to design a print and consider which image would unleash the full potential of the technique. Each student will then be working on their copper plate learning scraping and burnishing techniques and finally we will print the plate specifically covering inking and printing mezzotints.

Once you have completed the course we recommend signing up to one of our other Printmaking courses to learn a new technique, or join us for Open Access sessions on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills. After completing this course, students will be given one free Open Access session.
