During this six-week daytime course, you will experiment with two different relief printmaking techniques – woodcut and lino. In the first three sessions, you will learn to carve a linoleum plate to develop a series of reduction relief prints in multiple colour combinations. The final weeks of the course will focus on creating a multi-plate print edition by carving Japanese plywood plates. Relief printing focuses on form and texture; you will learn to combine the tone, hue and saturation of multiple colours to achieve an edition of prints on archival Italian paper.

Throughout this course you will learn how to:

  • Design, draw and carve a design onto a linoleum block
  • Design, draw and carve a design onto a wood block
  • Use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
  • Plan and stage your colour layers
  • Use a professional printing press

This course is ideal for beginners as well as more experienced printmakers.

After completing this course, students will be given a free Open Access session to come back and use the print room. Open Access runs on Wednesday evening and Saturday during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.

The studio is a low-​toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands-on learning. Students benefit from the diversity of attendees, taught by internationally renowned printmaking artists at a central location, offering a unique educational experience in London.

All Levels

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish. This means an student from the following experience levels can join this course:

Beginner

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience.

Beginner +

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium.

Intermediate

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.

Advanced

Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.

JACKIE SMITH

Jackie completed a Diploma in Fine Art at the Art Academy London in July 2018.  After a previous career working in urban and housing research her connections with, and investigations of places, have become a focus for her art making. Jackie is particularly interested in the way we shape, use and view the land. She makes mixed media installations, site specific work as well as working in paint and printmaking. Jackie has exhibited in shows around London and has work held in private collections in both the UK and internationally. She is currently an Associate Printmaker and part time tutor at the Art Academy in London.

STELLA YARROW

Stella is an artist printmaker focusing on the interrelationship between society and ecological systems. Her work celebrates nature, responds to the climate and ecological emergency, and proposes new possibilities for sustainable coexistence with the natural world. She specialises in lino cut, with its clear strong graphic qualities, and the innovative technique of etched lino, with its expressive and loose mark making. She has exhibited her prints in London and elsewhere in the UK. She teaches printmaking part-time at the Art Academy and is a Print Associate with the Art Academy Print Studio.

Please note that London Bridge has two exits, the most direct route is to follow signs to “Borough High Street”.

We cannot store your bikes at the Academy, however there is on-street bike parking near our Mermaid Court site.

Students are welcome to use our Common Room/ The Barn during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food.

You are also welcome to make tea or coffee.

  • You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment. Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.

Materials & Equipment

  • If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be booked on our Materials Page or on this page when you book the course
  • Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
  • All artwork at the Academy MUST be taken home at the end of the course or it will be disposed of.
  • Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silent during the class.
  • Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you a week before the start of your course.
