This 5 week course is a wonderfully relaxing way to start the weekend and develop drawing and creative skills both for beginners and advanced drawers. The course is suitable for all skill levels and is designed to enable students to express a creative response to either museum artworks, or outdoor environment. The tutor will meet each student at their unique individual level.
The course locations may vary nearer the time in response to the current situation. We will draw in indoor locations such as cafes and undercover markets where possible. Students will learn fundamental observational skills such structural drawing, measuring, tone and basic perspective. As well as develop an understanding of how artworks are put together to create particular impressions upon the viewer.

This course is suitable for students at our Beginner + level.

  • Beginner +

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium, but still follow a structured path with guidance from the tutor.

Other course levels include:

  • Beginner

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

  • Intermediate

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.

These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.

  • Advanced

Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.

Our Advanced courses include our Masterclasses.

All attendees must be aged 18 or over.

Please bring a range of soft pencils and a rubber and ideally A4 or A3 sketchbook.

The tutor will bring extra sheets of A2 Catridge paper so please bring an A2 Foam Board for support.

If you would like to purchase our drawing pack online you can collect this from the tutor at the beginning of your first class.

You will need to bring your own drawing materials to the class, which you can store at The Art Academy for the duration of the course. If you do not have your own materials, we recommend you order the Pack, below, at the time of booking, which will be available when you arrive for your first class. NATASHA LIEN

Natasha Lien (b. 1977) is a fine artist in drawing, painting and printmaking. Natasha’s compositions depict people, landscapes and cityscapes working with perspective, colour, tone, rhythm and form. She draws and paints from life and in many locations, from drawing large-scale interiors in the V&A, creating etchings from detailed studies of trees on Hampstead Heath, to painting landscapes in Jordan.

After her undergraduate training at Central St Martin’s, Natasha completed her postgraduate studies at The Prince’s Drawing School. Following graduation, one of her drawings Kensington Gardens (138 x 149cm) was selected by Royal Academician Ben Levine for the 2007 Summer Exhibition. The drawing, depicting a view of trees, was given a special mention by Levine who thought it “especially memorable”; it was also featured on The Royal Academy website and in their illustrated catalogue. Following this success, Natasha received a commission for a 4ft x 4ft drawing of The Old Vic Theatre.

Other notable drawings include ‘V&A New Court’ and ‘Trajan in the Cast Court’; a solar photo etching of the latter was acquired by the V&A.In 2016 Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts acquired two paintings of Petra for their collection.
