Young Artists is an exciting five day course for ages 12-14 providing high level art tuition, including drawing workshops, contemporary painting, specialist sculpture techniques, and using experimental media. Focused classes create a supportive environment, and there is a strong focus on personal outcomes and solutions to develop independent judgement. Access to specialist materials and facilities improve technical skills, and discussion and presentation sessions build confidence and critical understanding. This course is ideal for those studying a range of arts based GCSE subjects, or wanting to advance their artistic skills and creative confidence. 

During this course we’ll cover:

  • How to use a range of exciting drawing techniques and experiment with materials such as charcoal and chalk
  • Key skills for painting the figure, how to plan the composition, mix colour, approach the body and depict volume
  • Using mixed media and collage, understanding abstract approaches
  • Learning new sculptural techniques such as clay figure sculpture
  • Taking an artwork through from concept to completion, and discussing and presenting ideas and artworks

Please be aware that on Friday the course will finish at 4.30pm.

This course is suitable for students between the ages of 12 to 14 and is open to all skill levels.

  • Young Artists - Aged 12-14

    Chose this course if you are aged between 12 & 14. This course is open to all skill levels, whether you love art and are looking to advance you artistic skills and creative confidence or are new to the subject and want a bit of an introduction!

Please bring old clothes and two jam jars or containers for water.  Please also bring a camera/phone to photo document your work.

Preparation for the Personal Project day: students should bring in a range of images of a place, object, or concept, that excites and inspires them, to help develop their personal project.

Materials, including clay, are included in the cost of the course. You will be offered the opportunity to have your clay pieces fired. Hollowing-out is necessary before a piece can be fired. This is optional and additional hollowing and firing costs will apply.

JESSICA WETHERLY

A London based sculptor, Jessica’s recent work presents creatures in curious and surreal landscapes with a sci-fi aesthetic that evoke questions of agency as we face the ecological and climate breakdown. The objects and images build worlds that investigate the blindness of anthropocentric society, using an intuitive and playful range of everyday materials haunted by human touch. A training in figurative sculpture forms the foundation to her practice in traditional sculpture techniques of modelling, moulding and casting. Jessica excels at finding practical solutions to manifest ideas into reality and is interested in helping you discover meaning to your making within a wider contemporary and historical context. She is able to help students work with composition, anatomy, form and the architecture of space, applying core principals of observation to a variety of mediums. Jessica provides step by step methods to provide access for beginners whilst improving and directing intimidate and advanced students. Jessica teaches an array of drawing, sculpture, installation and critical practice. Jessica is a QEST Scholar and graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Sculpture. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally with her first solo show in Austin, USA at the end of 2018. In 2019, Wetherly has been selected as the winner of the Broomhill National Sculpture Prize and as the bursary award winner at the Royal Society of Sculptors. She has both public and private commissions including a permanent statue in Archbishop’s Park, Lambeth. Jessica has taken part in a number of residencies both in the UK and abroad in 2020 she will be taking part in Wild Biyoo in Goa, Korai Project Space in Cyprus and BilboaArte in the Basque Country.

JESS ROUTLEY

Jess is a painter and printmaker who is primarily concerned with themes of marginalised identity and representation. Prior to completing her degree in Contemporary Portraiture at Art Academy London, she studied Politics and Community Development. Her art practice is socially informed and wholly influenced by her own identity. 

Her works have been shown across London, including at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Show.

You are welcome to use our Common Room/ The Barn during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food.

Students will also be able to use the coffee machine, where free hot water, and paid-for hot drinks are available.

Students are encouraged to bring their own reusable mugs and water bottles where possible.

  • You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment. Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.
  • If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be purchased on our Materials Page or on the individual course page when you make your booking.
  • Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
  • All artwork MUST be taken home at the end of the course or it will be disposed of. Paintings that need to dry should be collected within a week. For clay sculptures that need hollowing and firing, you will receive a separate email when they can be collected.
  • Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silent during the class.
  • Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you at the beginning of your class.
  • Sometimes our photographer will pop in to get some images of our classes in progress. We will typically inform you beforehand if photography is taking place during your class; if you do not want to be photographed please let the photographer know!
