In this course students will learn all basic knowledge and techniques to complete their manga comic strip. The course focuses on the uniqueness on manga style, such as how to make pages look exciting and attractive within the limitation of monochrome and how to express the character’s emotions effectively. At the same time, it includes the very important basic skills like figure drawing. The students are encouraged to use traditional approach to ‘draw and plan’ pages and to finalise their work in digital form. The aim of the course is to make sure that all the students feel more confident creating manga illustrations and to complete at least two pages of manga style art.

This course is suitable for students between the ages of 12 to 16 and is open to all skill levels.

  • Young Artists - Aged 12-16

    Chose this course if you are aged between 12 & 16. This course is open to all skill levels, whether you love art and are looking to advance you artistic skills and creative confidence or are new to the subject and want a bit of an introduction!

Students are advised to bring:

  • Sketchbook
  • Pencils
  • Eraser
  • Black and white pens that you are comfortable to work with
  • A4 paper folder
  • A USB memory stick to backup your work. Though there will be the possibility of storing files on the computers we cannot take responsibility for the safekeeping of these files.

CHIE KUTSUWADA

Kutsuwada Chie was born and brought up in Japan. She graduated from the printmaking department of the Royal College of Art, London, and is now working as a professional manga artist. Her work Moonlight (2008, collected in The Mammoth Book of Best New Manga 3 by Constable & Robinson) was shortlisted in the Manga Jiman competition organised by the Japanese Embassy in the UK. One of her latest projects is a series of illustrated columns for Mainichi Weekly (published every two months by one of the major Japanese newspaper companies) about life and culture in UK. Her books are available in most English-speaking countries and Japan, and some are translated into Turkish, French, Italian and Spanish. Besides creating manga comics, she runs manga workshops at schools, libraries, and museums, such as the British Museum, the British Library, Welcome Collection and Victoria and Albert Museum. She has also worked on projects for UK JApanese Embassy, Channel 4 and CNN.

You are welcome to use our Common Room/ The Barn during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food.

Students will also be able to use the coffee machine, where free hot water, and paid-for hot drinks are available.

Students are encouraged to bring their own reusable mugs and water bottles where possible.

  • You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment. Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.
  • If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be purchased on our Materials Page or on the individual course page when you make your booking.
  • Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
  • All artwork MUST be taken home at the end of the course or it will be disposed of. Paintings that need to dry should be collected within a week. For clay sculptures that need hollowing and firing, you will receive a separate email when they can be collected.
  • Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silent during the class.
  • Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you at the beginning of your class.
  • Sometimes our photographer will pop in to get some images of our classes in progress. We will typically inform you beforehand if photography is taking place during your class; if you do not want to be photographed please let the photographer know!
