This course is a perfect introduction to relief printing and is open to all, from complete beginners to those with more experience.   Guided by an expert printmaker, you will learn how to translate your ideas into the graphic format of linocut. To add a seasonal touch to the experience students may decide to print cards rather than paper prints. Either way we hope you will enjoy the opportunity to develop or learn new skills and potentially create gifts for Christmas.

The studio is a low-toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands‐on learning. Students benefit from the diversity of attendees, taught by internationally renowned printmaking artists at a central location, offering a unique educational experience in London.

There is a maximum of eight students per course, materials are included and we advise that you book early to avoid disappointment. Come and discover the potential of the Print room!

This course is suitable for students at our Beginner level.

  • Beginner

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

Other course levels include:

  • Beginner +

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium, but still follow a structured path with guidance from the tutor.

  • Intermediate

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.

These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.

  • Advanced

Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.

Our Advanced courses include our Masterclasses.

All attendees must be aged 18 or over.

Material costs are included in your course fee (including ready made blank cards and envelopes made from high quality Fabriano Medioevalis). Inks, carving blocks and cartridge paper for proofing. Tools are provided on loan for the duration of the course. We estimate you will have the time to make around 5 cards or prints in total on each day. Additional materials can be purchased if you decide you want to come back and print more at one of our Open Access sessions at a later date. The blocks you design and carve are yours to keep and take away too.

Please bring with you ideas, sketchbooks, writing & drawing equipment to create your design in up to three colours plus white.

We recommend you return a few days after the course to collect your finished prints, allowing the ink time to dry.
