Course overview for Thrown Ceramics
Learn how to throw and trim clay forms on the potter’s wheel. This course will teach the fundamental skills of centering a piece of clay, opening and stretching it into an even balanced form, trimming the partially dried pots to refine the shape, considering surface and texture, plus adding colour through slip and glaze decorating techniques.
Initially, cylinders and bowls will be taught to give a solid understanding of the core techniques. You will start by using 500g balls of clay, working up to 1kg per thrown item. After an exhibition visit, you’ll develop a project to advance these core skills. This could for instance be concentrating on throwing larger or more complex shapes or using the wheel to make shapes that could then be cut, altered or joined. In combination with developing your understanding of the decorating techniques.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner
