The course is suitable for all skill levels and is designed to enable students to express a creative response to museum artworks, as well as develop an understanding of how artworks are put together to create particular impressions upon the viewer. The class will visit a different museum or gallery each week and students will draw from sculpture and painting across all genres. Students will learn fundamental observational skills such structural drawing, measuring, tone and basic perspective, as well as develop an understanding of how artworks are put together to create particular impressions upon the viewer.
What level is this course?
This course is suitable for students at our Beginner + level.
Beginner +
Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium, but still follow a structured path with guidance from the tutor.
Other course levels include:
Beginner
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.
Intermediate
Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.
These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.
Advanced
Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.
Our Advanced courses include our Masterclasses.
All attendees must be aged 18 or over.
What should I bring?
The tutor recommends that you bring the following materials:
- A large sketchbook (A4 or A3 size)
- Pencils (B,2B,3B,4B,6B etc) and a rubber – the museums will not allow people to use charcoal ( only charcoal pencils)
- Sharpener or craft knife
- Museums keep changing the rules about bag size so it’s safer to just bring a decent size sketchbook.
- Most museums have portable stools, however it’s always good to bring your own if you have one because sometimes they run out.
If you have purchased a Drawing Pack, you must collect this from Art Academy London prior to the start of your course. Please find how to find us here.
About Your Tutor
NATASHA LIEN
Natasha Lien (b. 1977) is a fine artist in drawing, painting and printmaking. Natasha’s compositions depict people, landscapes and cityscapes working with perspective, colour, tone, rhythm and form. She draws and paints from life and in many locations, from drawing large-scale interiors in the V&A, creating etchings from detailed studies of trees on Hampstead Heath, to painting landscapes in Jordan.
After her undergraduate training at Central St Martin’s, Natasha completed her postgraduate studies at The Prince’s Drawing School. Following graduation, one of her drawings Kensington Gardens (138 x 149cm) was selected by Royal Academician Ben Levine for the 2007 Summer Exhibition. The drawing, depicting a view of trees, was given a special mention by Levine who thought it “especially memorable”; it was also featured on The Royal Academy website and in their illustrated catalogue. Following this success, Natasha received a commission for a 4ft x 4ft drawing of The Old Vic Theatre.
Other notable drawings include ‘V&A New Court’ and ‘Trajan in the Cast Court’; a solar photo etching of the latter was acquired by the V&A.In 2016 Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts acquired two paintings of Petra for their collection. Natasha has shown her work in many exhibitions, including the 2004 and 2008 Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions, the Friends Open exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, the NEAC at the Mall Galleries, Chase Exhibition at The Royal College of Art.
