Join artist and printmaker Jamie Temple for this weekend masterlcass in Lino Cut printmaking. Jamie’s practice is rooted in printmaking and woodworking from which he creates architectural and landscape inspired works on paper and site specific installations. His work draws from a fascination with the built and natural environments we inhabit and transform, taking inspiration from architecture, landscapes and the environment, and experimenting with process and materials. During the course Jamie will guide you to learn the essential steps of linocutting, introducing the techniques, tools and materials to create impactful and beautiful lino prints.

You will first draw and plan your design, creating a practice printing block, before testing and trying out various mark-making techniques using a variety of gouges. Following a colour demonstration, you will choose your colour combinations before hand printing your final design in stages.

Throughout the masterclass you will learn:
-About Jamie’s work, processes, and his career to date
-How to plan and draw your designs onto a linoleum block
-How to use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
-How to use a specialist printing press

This course is suitable for all levels of printmaking experience, and will give you insight into Jamie Temple’s process in producing beautiful prints.

The studio is a low-toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands-on learning. Once you have completed the course we recommend signing up to one of our other Printmaking courses to learn a new technique, or join us for Open Access sessions on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.

This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish.

  • Beginner

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

  • Beginner +

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium, but still follow a structured path with guidance from the tutor.

  • Intermediate

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.

These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.

  • Advanced

Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.

Our Advanced courses include our Masterclasses.

All attendees must be aged 18 or over.

Please bring some ideas, sketches or images as an initial starting point for your prints. Material costs are included in your course fee.

JAMES TEMPLE

Jamie Temple is an artist from North East Scotland, living and working in South East London, whose practice is rooted in printmaking and wood carving, from which he creates unique works on paper, sculpture and installation. His work draws from a fascination with the built and natural environments we inhabit, move in and transform. Temple takes inspiration from the infinitely complex planetary systems and social structures in which we all survive. Recent works, projects and exhibitions speak to the complexity of the world in which we exist and its multitude of systems and structures layered one upon another; interacting, interfering, diffracting. Layers of chaotic and dynamic systems interwoven – environmental, social, planetary, human made. The flows of matter in the air we breathe, particles in our oceans and drinking water. Disrupted weather patterns and polluted atmospheres and landscapes.
