Student Story
FIONA LAND
My first experience of art college was at Kingston (then a polytechnic) where I studied Graphic Design. I gained my degree and went on to work in packaging design and then children’s publishing before starting a family and working freelance. Family life took over, the freelance work fell by the wayside and eighteen years flew by in a flash. Then, with the onset of a mild mid-life crisis, I found myself trawling the internet for some sort of creative outlet.
I decided I needed to learn to paint. I wanted to paint people and I wondered if there was anywhere out there that would help me to do that. That is when I found the Art Academy. I couldn’t believe my luck; a two year Diploma in Contemporary Portraiture? Yes please! Plus the Academy could offer fantastic tutors, an easy commute and a great location. There was no other course that fitted the bill so perfectly.
The elective Skills Workshop courses are invaluable. The tutors are truly inspiring; they are so generous with their knowledge and expertise, they are encouraging and honest and during the Studio Practice modules they really help you to explore your creativity. I must admit that at first I felt totally out of my comfort zone but I was part of a fantastic, supportive group of fellow artists and with the tutor support the last few years have been a joy. I am delighted by the unbelievable progress I have made while at the Academy.
