    This is a wonderful next step for those with basic drawing skills to explore drawing further through an exciting thematic approach. Each week we introduce a different theme such as rhythm, mystery, energy and harmony and investigate these using a range of inventive drawing methods. This is a fun and creative approach to ideas and issues in drawing, and over the course we develop new skills of mark making and self-expression, using a range of starting points such as the life model, still life, and natural forms.

    This course is designed for students who have either completed our ‘Drawing for Beginners Stage 1’ and ‘Drawing Stage 2’ courses or already have some experience of drawing, and want to take their skills to the next level. Over the course, students will explore drawing from observation, memory and imagination, thereby developing a deeper understanding of drawing and greatly enhancing drawing skills. Each week we focus on a particular aspect of drawing. Starting with measurement and explore this in different contexts, so that students will gain confidence in drawing a wide variety of subjects including still life, life models, and urban landscape. Through trying different approaches and materials, students will begin to develop a ‘visual vocabulary’ of drawing. There will be opportunities to work both, inside and outside the studio, and in museums and galleries.

    Understanding the structure of the human figure and the way it is situated within a space is an essential skill for anyone keen to develop their drawing and observational skills. Each week you will have a different theme to explore, working from the life model with guidance from our highly experienced tutor. With an encouraging focus exploring your own approach to drawing, you will work through a series of exercises, using a wide range of materials including charcoal and graphite. This course teaches skills and expressive drawing in a unique way to develop your drawing most effectively, and is suitable for more advanced drawers as well as beginners.

Throughout the course, students will have a chance to improve observational drawing skills, along with more expressive sculpture and painting. Students will also learn to approach the human figure through drawing, painting and sculpture, before rounding off the course with an introduction to printmaking. This is a great ‘taster’ course and an excellent opportunity to develop new skills, explore materials, and have fun.
