In the first five weeks of the course you will focus on:
– Writing the first draft of your story
– Developing a story arc
– Designing your characters
– Developing ideas for a page turning script and storyboard planningIn the second half of the course you will:
– Focus on developing and refining your visuals
– Experimenting with colour pencil, watercolour and mixed media to find the best way to bring your story to lifeBy the end of the course, you will have a final set of illustrations, a storyboard, several page layouts and an individual action plan to help you turn your story plans into a finished sample for a publisher.

Our tutor Rachael Ball is a published author and an experienced teacher. Her book ‘The Inflatable Woman’ was a Guardian Best Graphic Novel in 2015. -

Each session will focus on a different theme, providing a wide range of techniques to raise confidence and enhance visual awareness. Through various drawing approaches including still life, life drawing and portraiture, you will learn to explore and understand line, tone, measurement, texture and composition. There will be a life model in some sessions and students are encouraged to express themselves freely with guidance from the tutor.

– Texture
– CompositionThere will be a life model in some sessions and students are encouraged to express themselves freely with guidance from the tutor. Over the course, students will explore:– Drawing from observation
– Memory and imagination
– Rhythm and movemenentYou will develop a deeper understanding of the drawing process and have time to enhance your drawing skills.
Each week focusses on a particular aspect of drawing. Students will explore measurement and gain confidence in drawing a wide variety of subjects including still life, life models, and urban landscapes. Through using different approaches and materials, students will begin to develop a ‘visual vocabulary’ of drawing. You will develop ways to communicate texture, weight, material and surface in your work.There will be opportunities to work both inside and outside the studio, and in museums and galleries. Working outside of the studio will teach students how to capture movement and figures in space, feeding off the energy of the environment around them. Students will work outside in the ‘real world’, and experience how this produces a different kind of energy in their drawings.

This new course focuses on the importance of perspective and spatial perception as the basis of realism, helping you develop and learn the laws of geometry to create form, dimension, distance and space within your works.
With a focus on producing quick freehand sketches of buildings, rooms, furniture, and stairs, using plans, elevation, and axonometric drawings, master both one and two-point perspective techniques. This course is suitable for all levels, those experienced artists who are looking to strengthen their fundamentals of drawing, as well as beginners.
