Tutor Laura Ribbons is an experienced contemporary watercolour artist and educator who will guide you through the course week by week and work alongside you, demonstrating a variety of techniques and encouraging students to discover their individual creative voice. Each week we will work through a different theme and develop skills in colour mixing, composition, texture and perspective. As well as this, you will gain a deeper understanding of why watercolours are so suited to the depiction of plants, and what we can learn from plants by studying them from the artist’s perspective.

Over the ten weeks, students work across the different disciplines of painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. Throughout the course, students will have a chance to improve observational drawing skills, along with more expressive sculpture and painting. Students will also learn to approach the human figure through drawing, painting and sculpture, before rounding off the course with an introduction to printmaking. This is a great ‘taster’ course and an excellent opportunity to develop new skills, explore materials, and have fun.

Hand Built Ceramics

In the run up to Christmas you will also be able to create your own Christmas gifts and decorations.
Throughout the course you will learn core techniques such as coiling, pinching, slab building, as well as decorating methods, to make your bespoke finished wares. You will also have the opportunity to delve into more experimental forms, utilising your new skills to make sculptural objects.Â
This course will provide a solid understanding and methodology of building and working with clay to make your own creations.

Each week you will have a different theme to explore, working from the life model with guidance from our highly experienced tutor. With an encouraging focus exploring your own approach to drawing, you will work through a series of exercises, using a wide range of materials including charcoal and graphite. This course teaches skills and expressive drawing in a unique way to develop your drawing most effectively, and is suitable for more advanced drawers as well as beginners.

Students will be introduced to a range of techniques and will spend the morning exploring the properties of both and making a series of colour studies. In the afternoon, students will have the opportunity of making a larger work, creating their own composition and working in watercolours, inks or a combination of the two to paint their own still life incoporating plants and objects.
Laura is an experienced tutor and has been working professionally with inks and watercolours for over a decade, she is a passionate advocate for the two mediums. The session is open to both complete begginers and more experienced artists alike and will be relaxed and friendly. Laura believes in taking an exploratory approach to teaching and will support students to test out the medium and to uncover their creative voice.

Relief Printmaking
Course Code: D2301PR04 Tutor: Stella Yarrow, Jackie Smith Course Dates: Thursdays, 5th October - 23rd November 2023 Days: 6 Times: 10.00am – 3.00pm Experience Level: All Levels Fee: £365 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR £365.00This NEW course is ideal for beginners as well as more experienced printmakers. During the six sessions, you will experiment with different relied printmaking techniques, such as linocut and woodcut. In the first three sessions, you will learn to carve a linoleum plate to develop a series of reduction relief prints in multiple colour combinations. The final weeks of the course will focus on creating a multi-plate print edition by carving Japanese plywood plates. Relief printing focuses on form and texture; you will learn to combine the tone, hue and saturation of multiple colours to achieve an edition of prints on archival Italian paper.
Open Access runs on Wednesday evening and Saturday during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.
The studio is a low-​toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands-on learning. Students benefit from the diversity of attendees, taught by internationally renowned printmaking artists at a central location, offering a unique educational experience in London.
