    This NEW course takes an exploratory approach to watercolour, focusing on how the medium can be most effectively used to investigate plants, the environment and the climate crisis. Tutor Laura Ribbons is an experienced contemporary watercolour artist and educator who will guide you through the course week by week and work alongside you, demonstrating a variety of techniques and encouraging students to discover their individual creative voice. Each week we will work through a different theme and develop skills in colour mixing, composition, texture and perspective. As well as this, you will gain a deeper understanding of why watercolours are so suited to the depiction of plants, and what we can learn from plants by studying them from the artist’s perspective.

Over five weeks, experience the vibrant medium by learning the fundamentals to a level where you are able to begin expressing your creative potential. Understand tone, colour theory, approaches to portraiture and landscape painting through practical studies and exercises, resulting in developing a personal project and complete work using the knowledge developed throughout.

    For beginners and those returning to oil painting, this course is divided into six easy-to-follow lessons that you can take at your own pace. Your tutor, Lucy Smallbone, is an experienced teacher of oil and acrylics at Art Academy London who has a passion for gestural landscape painting. She will explain why she enjoys painting with oils, introduce you to the concepts of tone, colour and colour-mixing, show you four different techniques for applying oil paint and explain how you can plan your own projects and develop a style of your own going forward.

    Students need to purchase their own materials for this course. We are not able to provide our painting pack for this course.

  • Painting and Abstraction – Online Course

    This is a fun and ideas-filled course, offering a structured introduction to abstract painting. You’ll be guided through a number of different approaches: playing with the possibilities of mark-making and colour; considering how we begin a painting including working from imagination or using abstraction; experimenting with process-based painting; and exploring the uses of collage to create exciting compositions. We will be inspired by a range of references by relevant artists, and your tutor will share demonstrations and tips throughout. This course will build your confidence and provide you with lots of tools with which to develop your paintings. Suitable for beginners and those with a little more experience looking to make experimental paintings together!
