Art History – Materials in the History of Sculpture (From Marble to Video and Installation)
Course Code: OC2301AH02 Tutor: Daniel Greaney Course Dates: Mondays, 6th November - 4th December 2023 Days: 5 Times: 6.30pm - 8pm Experience Level: All Levels Fee: £110 Location: Online £110.00Investigate the working processes of sculptors from pivotal moments in art history as they honed their skills across a variety of media. Beginning with marble sculptures from Ancient Greece, we will journey to Renaissance Germany and examine the tradition for lime wood carving. 19th Century French artists including Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin challenged conventions with their use of wax, plaster and bronze to present the human figure in radical new ways. In the Modern era, use of the ‘found-object’ became commonplace, a concept which continued to the 1990s with the Young British Artists (YBAS). Contemporary practitioners have used performance, video and installation to address a variety of themes, but some are also reliant on those traditional methods of production which have been standard practice for millennia.
