Friday Open Life – Long Pose

Students will be able to approach the human figure in any way they please and do as many drawings or paintings as they care to pursue with as much or as little instruction as they like. Your experienced tutors will happily guide both beginners and the more experienced painters.
Students should feel free to use whichever materials they enjoy the most, whether that is drawing in charcoal or ink or painting in oils or acrylics. Cartridge paper is provided for the course but please bring your own drawing/painting materials.

The model will pose for short lengths of time, ranging from 1 minute – 20 minutes.

One Day Taster: Oil Painting
Course Code: TAS2302T01 Tutor: Jess Routley Course Dates: Saturday, 27th January 2024 Days: 1 Times: 10.30am - 4.30pm Experience Level: Beginner Fee: 105 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR £105.00This is a fun day-long taster course in oil painting for those who may be considering a longer evening or daytime course and are wondering how much they will enjoy it. Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in hands-on, practical demonstrations to show you how to mix colour and see shape and tone, and how these elements relate to form a composition. We aim to foster self-certainty and an enjoyment of painting in a relaxed yet stimulating environment.
You will make at least two paintings in the day, the morning will be spent focusing on how to handle oil paint whilst working from a still-life set up using natural and organic forms. During the afternoon students will be taken through detailed colour theory whilst painting a bright colourful still life, they will learn how colour and pigment strengths affect oil paint and how to use it to create a vibrant expressive painting. Throughout the day you will be encouraged to play and enjoy the application of paint whist also understanding techniques of working from observation.

Using the colour wheel as a starting point, your tutor will introduce you to the basic principles of colour theory, looking at colour relativity, complimentary colours and explaining different approaches to mixing.

By working from the model, and by developing a creative project, students will explore multiple ways of using paint to convey a certain message or feeling. In this course you will explore the following:
– Brushwork
– Painting using a life model
– Abstraction
– Narrative and expression
– ‘Hybrid’ painting – emulating other artists work and combining it with your own
– Time to develop personal projectsIn the first part of the course students will be working from the figure, developing core painting skills whilst also reflecting on their use of paint. Students will develop a series of artworks, from quick sketches to longer more developed pieces. The focus will be on developing expressive paintings through their specific use of colour, composition and brushwork. You will also be exploring other artists work and develop an understanding of how paint can be used to coney a variety thoughts and ideas.
In the second part of the course students will work on a personal creative project. Students will be guided step by step through the process of developing an idea, collecting source material and references, experimenting with different techniques and approaches, before the final execution. By looking at contemporary and historical artists, and through dialogue with the group, students will develop their creative and critical awareness. This course would be a great follow on from Panting: Stage 3 or Portrait Painting.

Portrait Painting

This well structured course will teach students how to accurately paint a portrait, and the different techniques involved.
The emphasis will be on learning to see form and colour accurately, using a life model, and applying these skills to better create loose, expressive portraits.
The course will cover:
– Proportion and the structure of the head
– Tonal studies in monochrome
– Introduction to using colour
– Applying paint using a palette knife
– Contrasting and bright backgroundsStarting with drawing, students will be taught proportion and how to structure the head. Following on, you will be working with oil paints and develop a series of artworks from short expressive painting sketches, to longer more detailed pieces. As the weeks progress you will also have the option to paint more of the figure if preferred. The class has the benefit of an experienced model every week as well as tuition from a talented professional artist.
