Abstract Painting for All

The tutor will lead you through hands-on demonstrations, group discussions of relevant artists’ work, and there will also be plenty of individual guidance. You’ll build your confidence and gain a practical understanding of the fundamentals of painting, including colour, tone, mark-making and composition. You’ll then have the opportunity to complete a larger abstract painting inspired by an artist of your choice. This course is suitable for beginners who have completed an introductory painting course already and are keen to explore painting in an experimental way, as well as more experienced students who would like to develop their understanding of abstraction.

Introduction to Sculpture – Plaster and other media – NEEDS DB
Course Code: WC2301103 Tutor: Farnoush Amini Course Dates: Saturday & Sunday, 9th - 10th December 2023 Days: 2 Times: 10.00am – 5.00pm Experience Level: Beginner Fee: £180 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR £180.00This NEW 2-day course is an exciting introduction for beginners, as well as for those with some previous experience, to gain or develop basic plaster and wire sculpture skills. Working with plaster and wire, you will learn a range of techniques with the opportunity to explore your own creative project.
During the first day of the course, you will make plaster cast reliefs and learn how to make an aluminium armature as a base for plaster. You will also be shown basic techniques of attaching, cutting and shaping wire. The course will culminate with you developing your own wire and plaster project with guidance from the tutor.

One Day Taster: Oil Painting – 14th October
Course Code: TAS2301T01 Tutor: Nicholas McLeod Course Dates: Saturday, 14th October 2023 Days: 1 Times: 10.30am – 4.30pm Experience Level: Beginner Fee: 105 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR £105.00This is a fun day-long taster course in oil painting for those who may be considering a longer evening or daytime course and are wondering how much they will enjoy it. Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in hands-on, practical demonstrations to show you how to mix colour and see shape and tone, and how these elements relate to form a composition. We aim to foster self-certainty and an enjoyment of painting in a relaxed yet stimulating environment.
You will make at least two paintings in the day, the morning will be spent focusing on how to handle oil paint whilst working from a still-life set up using natural and organic forms. During the afternoon students will be taken through detailed colour theory whilst painting a bright colourful still life, they will learn how colour and pigment strengths affect oil paint and how to use it to create a vibrant expressive painting. Throughout the day you will be encouraged to play and enjoy the application of paint whist also understanding techniques of working from observation.

Using the colour wheel as a starting point, your tutor will introduce you to the basic principles of colour theory, looking at colour relativity, complimentary colours and explaining different approaches to mixing.
This course is suitable for all abilities although some previous drawing or painting experience is recommended.

Students will be able to approach the human figure in any way they please and do as many drawings or paintings as they care to pursue with as much or as little instruction as they like. Your experienced tutors will happily guide both beginners and the more experienced painters. Students should feel free to use whichever materials that they enjoy the most, whether that is drawing in charcoal or ink or painting in oils or acrylics. All paper is provided for the course but please bring your own drawing/painting materials.
