A Festive Introduction to Printmaking: Christmas Cards

This course is a perfect introduction to relief printing and is open to all, from complete beginners to those with more experience.
To add a seasonal touch to the experience students may decide to print cards rather than paper prints. Either way we hope you will enjoy the opportunity to develop or learn new skills and potentially create gifts for Christmas.
The studio is a low-toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands‐on learning. Students benefit from the diversity of attendees, taught by internationally renowned printmaking artists at a central location, offering a unique educational experience in London.

Etching: Experimental Techniques

Students will depart from tradition to develop a series of zinc plates etched in saline sulphate by experimenting with the alchemy of the intaglio process; brushing, splashing, dripping, blowing and smudging to produce fascinating and unique prints. Attendees will be introduced to a variety of novel etching and printing techniques including painterly spit-bite aquatint.

From Life Drawing to Print

We will spend Saturday in the drawing studio, drawing from life and making monoprints, while experimenting with the infinite marks that we can make using print. For the second day we will be in the print room, using dry-point and collagraph techniques to further add to the experience, using our drawings and observations from the day before to continue the exploration into this varied practice.This course is for those who have experience with print as well as those who are complete beginners. -

Jamie’s practice is rooted in printmaking and woodworking from which he creates architectural and landscape inspired works on paper and site specific installations. His work draws from a fascination with the built and natural environments we inhabit and transform, taking inspiration from architecture, landscapes and the environment, and experimenting with process and materials. During the course Jamie will guide you to learn the essential steps of linocutting, introducing the techniques, tools and materials to create impactful and beautiful lino prints.
You will first draw and plan your design, creating a practice printing block, before testing and trying out various mark-making techniques using a variety of gouges. Following a colour demonstration, you will choose your colour combinations before hand printing your final design in stages.
Throughout the masterclass you will learn:

Lino Etching Weekend

It teaches a more gestural approach to lino printmaking, combining the classical skill of carving a lino block with etching its surface with caustic soda, bringing together painterly textures and graphic forms in a colourful multi-block print.
Throughout this course you will learn how to:
-Design and draw your design onto two linoleum blocks
-Use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
-Plan and stage your prints
-Use caustic soda to achieve painterly results and combine them with traditional lino cut

Printmaking: Collagraph
Course Code: WC2302PR86 Tutor: Jackie Smith Course Dates: Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th January, 2024 Days: 2 Times: 10.00am – 5.00pm Experience Level: Ages 18+, All Levels Fee: £195 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR Recommend booking before: Friday 12th January 2024 £195.00Collagraphs are made by collaging onto, and cutting into, a thin cardboard surface. Many interesting textures can be used to build up plates including, textured tapes/paper/fabrics, glue, carborundum grit and even leaves. Plates can be printed both in intaglio or relief and as a multi-plate print. You will learn how to create a variety of textures, how to use chine collé (experimenting with thin surfaces) to overlay colour and register two plates on top of each other. You will come away with a small edition of colourful prints and expand your knowledge of a process that is both an exciting and affordable form of printmaking.
This course is suitable for all levels.

Printmaking: Japanese Woodcut
Course Code: WC2302PR183 Tutor: Carol Wilhide Justin ARE Course Dates: Sundays, 3rd March & 10th March 2024 Days: 2 Times: 10.00am – 5.00pm Experience Level: Ages 18+, Beginner Fee: £180 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR Recommend booking before: Friday 16th February 2024 £180.00Japanese Woodcut or Mokuhanga is a relief process that is completely non-toxic in that it uses watercolour pigments and nori (rice starch) instead of oil-based ink. The prints are handprinted using a baren, no presses are necessary making this a process that can be done at home. The workshop explores the history of the traditional Japanese prints as exemplified by Hokusai and Hiroshige and follows the teaching that the tutor Carol Wilhide Justin herself received from Japanese sensei on her residency in Japan.
Students are required to join from day one, it is not possible to rejoin the course if a session (or part of it) is missed.
