Half-Scale Torso Sculpture Masterclass with Ellen Christiansen
Course Code: WC2302053 Tutor: Ellen Christiansen MSPS Course Dates: Saturday & Sunday, 23rd - 24th March 2024 Days: 2 Times: 10.00am – 5.00pm Experience Level: Advanced Fee: £225 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR £225.00This is the perfect 2-day course for students with experience of working directly from life who wish to push their technique further. You will be introduced to Ellen Christiansen’s unique method of working in clay using measurement, observation and directional light. You will be working on a seated, one third scale figure without an armature.
We will be measuring the model in a very precise way, up close, using callipers, plumb lines and scaling rulers. This is an opportunity for students with previous experience of working from life in clay to build on their clay modelling and observational skills. It’s also an opportunity to learn about surface anatomy and the skeleton.
There will be the option to leave your finished sculpture for hollowing and firing for an additional fee.
This course is for Advanced students and aims to build upon previous experience.

Introduction to Sculpting in Plaster

Working with plaster and wire, you will learn a range of techniques with the opportunity to explore your own creative project.
During the first day of the course, you will make plaster cast reliefs and learn how to make an aluminium armature as a base for plaster. You will also be shown basic techniques of attaching, cutting and shaping wire. The course will culminate with you developing your own wire and plaster project with guidance from the tutor.

One Day Taster: Ceramics
Course Code: TAS2302T04 Tutor: Adele Williams Course Dates: Sunday, 18th February 2024, Sunday, 19th November 2023 Days: 1 Times: 10.30am – 4.30pm Experience Level: Beginner Fee: £105 Location: Art Academy London, 165A Mermaid Court, SE1 1HR £105.00This is a fun, day-long taster course in hand built ceramics for those who may be considering a longer evening or Saturday course or to try something new.
Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in practical demonstrations to help you to learn the various processes involved in working with clay by using classic hand built ceramic techniques such as pinching and coiling as well as basic finishing techniques. We aim to offer a relaxed yet stimulating environment while introducing you to the versatility of working with clay. Create your very own mug, vase or bowl, or Christmas decorations for your tree. At the end of the day you will have the option to have your work kiln fired.

Spend the morning with the joy of clay to create a small figure sculpture from a life model. In the afternoon mix plaster and other media to make your own creative sculpture. No need to worry if you have nothing in mind.
This is a great opportunity to combine these two basic sculpture skills and techniques. There will be the option to leave your clay sculpture for hollowing and firing for an additional fee and you are welcome to take home your plaster piece.Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in practical demonstrations to help you get a feel for the medium and the way it can be manipulated into shape and form. We aim to foster self-certainty and an enjoyment of sculpting in a relaxed yet stimulating environment.Â

Students will work across the different disciplines of painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. Students will have a chance to improve observational drawing skills; try out more expressive sculpture and painting, and learn how to approach the human figure, using a variety of materials and methods. This is a great ‘taster’ course and an excellent opportunity to develop new skills, explore materials and have fun.

This class is suitable for beginners with no background in ceramics as well as more advanced 3D artists. By learning basic techniques of ceramics such as coiling and slab building, you will start working on your own project inspired by nature and organic shapes. Your tutor will guide you step by step thorough the course. At the end of the course, you would have the opportunity for your piece to be fired.
