Abstract Painting

The central focus is to question our conditioning; how historical, political, social, gendered and other factors have influenced our relation to the visual world around us, and therefore our relation to visual art. The general daily structure of this course will be as follows: every day we will begin with an introduction to visual and theoretical references. Then we will then paint until mid-afternoon, at which point we will have a discussion about each participant’s work. The last day of the course the participants will make a self-directed painting for half of the day, after lunch we will do a crit on the work, in which everyone will receive comments from the group and have a chance to respond. -

The tutor, Rachael Ball has also taught workshops on writing and illustrating picture books and graphic novels at Anglia Ruskin University, the Arvon, the House of Illustration and the City Lit. Her first graphic novel, published by Bloomsbury was one of the Guardian’s best graphic novels 2015. Kiln Formed Glass

Working with quick sketches in oil or acrylic, students will practice how to efficiently and accurately capture tone and colour in the outdoors. Creating loose and vigorous paintings, we will look at how to capture a sense of light and atmosphere at different times of day. Looking at the works of other artists we will discuss different ways of composing a painting in an urban setting. Painting the Figure in Space

We start by painting the life model in the studio space, focusing on perspective and placing the figure in the room. The next day we look at a technique used by contemporary painters and the old masters, of working from miniature models as a way of working out interesting compositions. Days 4 and 5 are one project – gathering information collected from outside, and then constructing your own compositions in the studio, incorporating 3 figures into the space as a way of suggesting narrative. Oils and acrylics both welcome. -
Pewter Casting using the “Lost Wax” Technique

Pewter is a metal that can be cast and finished in your own studio, with relatively basic equipment, and without the need of a foundry. Pewter is a silver coloured tin metal alloy which melts at low temperatures. During the course you will model a sculpture in wax, learn how to cast in pewter using plaster waste moulds and the ‘lost wax’ casting technique.
Bring your own ideas or come with an open mind and be inspired to work with new materials and sculpture techniques. This is a practical workshop based course with one to one and group guidance from the tutor. -

For the first two days, you will learn to work with Japanese wood carving tools to create a series of multi-colour reduction relief prints on linoleum. During the last two days of the course, you will learn to combine both a hard-ground line and aquatint tone to create a series of black and white etchings. Guided by the tutor, students will expand their knowledge to realise a portfolio of prints.

Reclining Figure Sculpture Masterclass

Looking at how a person interacts with an object such as a bed or cushions to support their own weight, we will be able to look at compressions of flesh, relaxed muscles and dependent on the pose, tensed muscles where the model may be propping up their own weight. We will aim to make the piece suitable for hollowing and firing at the end of the class, which will be at an additional cost.
