This workshop will introduce you to drypoint and carborundum – versatile techniques that allow for an interesting combination of both expressive line drawing and deep tone and texture in printmaking. You will use pointed tools to scratch into a hard surface plate to make a drawing which then holds the ink. This will then be combined with a carborundum fine grit which is glued to the surface of the plate and holds the ink to provide rich velvety tones. This course suitable for both beginners and those with some experience and will allow you to produce an exciting range of prints using our fantastic etching presses and equipment in the print workshop.
As part of the course you will learn how to:
– Prepare and create a drypoint etching plate using various tools
– Apply and use carborundum grit and glue to create tone and texture
– Experiment with different ways of incorporating colour in your prints
– Ink up and print your plates using an etching press making a small set of unique prints
Once you have completed this course, you may be interested in joining one of other printmaking courses such as Printmaking: Colour Linocut, or join us for Open Access sessions which give you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.
