This two‑day course is designed for beginners who want to learn the basics of wood engraving. We’ll start with a short overview of the technique’s history and its use in book illustration and fine‑art printmaking.
Across the weekend, you’ll learn how to use basic engraving tools safely and effectively, practise mark‑making on end‑grain blocks, and explore how contrast, texture and tone are created through different cuts. You’ll work through the full process from preparing a design to engraving and printing.
All prints will be hand‑burnished, we will not be using a press. There will also be time to experiment with simple two‑colour printing for those who want to try layering their work.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a small edition of prints and a solid understanding of the core skills needed to continue developing your wood engraving practice.
Please note: The Course Schedule provides a general overview of course content and may be subject to minor changes at the tutor’s discretion.
