Creativity : Four Helpful Ways to Find Time in a Busy World

Creativity :Finding Time in a Busy World

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s all too easy for creativity to take a backseat. Between work, family commitments, and the endless to-do lists that fill our days, finding time for creative pursuits can feel like an indulgence we simply can’t afford. Yet, the truth is that making time for creativity isn’t just a luxury—it’s a necessity for our mental and emotional well-being.

The Mental and Emotional Benefits of Creative Practices

Engaging in creative activities has been shown to have profound effects on our mental health. Whether it’s painting, drawing, writing, or playing a musical instrument, creative practices can serve as a powerful form of self-expression. They allow us to process emotions, reduce stress and find a sense of calm amidst the chaos of daily life.

Creativity is more than just an outlet for relaxation; it can also enhance our problem-solving skills and boost our ability to think outside the box. When we make space for creativity, we’re not just nurturing our artistic side—we’re fostering a mindset that can positively impact every aspect of our lives.

Prioritising Creativity in a Busy Schedule

Given the benefits, why do so many of us struggle to make time for creativity? Often, it’s because we view it as something that can wait until we have more time, not realising that the busier we are, the more we need these creative moments to recharge and re-center.

Here are a few tips to help you prioritise creativity in your busy schedule:

  1. Schedule It In: Just as you would with any other important activity, block out time in your calendar for creative pursuits. Even 30 minutes a few times a week can make a significant difference.
  2. Start Small: You don’t need to commit to a large project. Start with something manageable, like sketching in a notebook, writing a short poem, or experimenting with a new recipe. The key is consistency, not scale.
  3. Combine It With Routine Activities: Listen to an inspiring podcast or audiobook while you cook or commute, or keep a sketchbook by your bed to doodle before you sleep. Integrating creativity into your existing routine can help make it a habit.
  4. Join a Community: Being part of a creative community can provide motivation and inspiration. Consider joining a local art class like those at Art Academy or an online group where you can share your work and learn from others.
