This course takes an exploratory approach to the medium of watercolour. Open to complete beginners and more experienced artists alike, this course will give you the opportunity to explore watercolour in all its translucent glory, and to begin to develop your own creative voice. This course will focus specifically on why watercolour is so often considered as the optimum medium for depicting the ‘natural world’. Course tutor, contemporary artist and plant lover Laura Ribbons will guide you through the process of colour mixing, ‘glazing’ and working wet-on-wet, as well as some less traditional techniques! You will be invited to work from plants in the studio and to create work using plant matter, as well as incorporating alternative painting materials and collage.
Throughout the course you will learn how to:
– Develop compositions in watercolour
– Mix your own colours
– Build up layers or ‘glazes’ to create more intense colour
– Understand the use of ‘wet-on-wet’ vs ‘wet on dry’
– Create texture
– Incorporate collage
– Use watercolour to communicate your ideas
You will produce a range of works covering a number of different techniques, from abstract compositions to botanical paintings, to contemporary urban landscapes. Laura is a passionate advocate for the medium of watercolour, it has long been overlooked and undervalued, but has been experiencing somewhat of a renaissance amongst a number of contemporary artists in recent years. Come along and see if you agree!
