Japanese Woodcut or Mokuhanga is a relief printmaking process that is completely non-toxic in that it uses watercolour pigments and nori (rice starch) instead of oil-based ink. The prints are handprinted using a baren – a disc-shaped printmaking tool used to hand burnish a print by rubbing it over the surface of the paper when it is in contact with the inked-up block. No presses are necessary for this technique, making this a process that can be done at home.
The course explores the history of the traditional Japanese prints as exemplified by Hokusai and Hiroshige and follows the teaching that the tutor Carol Wilhide Justin herself received from Japanese sensei on her residency in Japan.
Throughout the course you will learn how to:

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner

is a printmaker working mainly in relief printmaking – woodcut, linocut, Japanese woodcut and bookbinding. She graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2017 with an MA in Print. In 2014 she was awarded a residency by MI-Lab to learn Mokuhanga (Japanese woodcut) in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan from Japanese senses and it has become her main practice. In Mokuhanga, the delicate nuance of watercolour is married to the certainties of the woodcut. The prints are hand printed using a baren on Japanese paper.
Since her MA Carol has been on a residency to Finland to work with Tuula Moilenen, an internationally renowned Mokuhanga printmaker and specialist. Her work has been exhibited at Clifford Chance, Travers Smith (where she won the CSR RCA Award), Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair 2017 and 2018 where she won the Intaglio Printmaker’s Prize, National Open Art Exhibition and the West Yorkshire Print Workshop Show ‘Japan’.
Her work is held in print collections at Clifford Chance, RCA, CfSHE Tokyo Japan, Awagami Awa Japan and the V&A Museum in London.
She teaches Japanese woodcut, bookbinding and relief printmaking at Morley College, the City Literary Institute and Art Academy London.
