Our masterclasses are a special feature of the Art Academy. Drawing on our extensive professional network we are able to book sought-after practitioners to teach classes – people who are experts in their field. Masterclasses are designed as a more in-depth course for students who are interested in expanding their skills with an established artist. Teaching groups are deliberately small, with intense tuition, and personalised guidance.

This Masterclass offers the chance to study under the tuition of artist, Robin Lee Hall. Over one weekend you will cover key techniques in accurately painting a portrait whilst studying from a model.

Sessions will focus on the head in space with a particular emphasis on composition and colour. Students will create small compositional studies that focus on underpainting/underdrawing and tone. Students will explore mark-making, and learn how to use unconventional portrait dimensions to their painting surface. This course is aimed for those who have some experience with oil painting and portraiture.

The course is split into two sessions:

Session 1 (Saturday):

  • Develop composition by creating studies and mapping out basic tonal areas

Session 2 (Sunday):

  • Use an extended palette
  • Explore colour mixing in more detail
  • Accurately represent tones by working from dark to light
