This exciting and experimental course explores contemporary painting processes and surfaces, testing and discovering new material languages in paint. You will expand and develop your understanding of what paint can do, and the specific material qualities of paints, contextualised with contemporary artists and movements, and your own individual subjects and themes. You will investigate how various paints (including spray paints, encaustic wax, gloss paints, acrylics) feel and handle and how to use them. You will also explore the interaction of paint with other surfaces such as found objects and photo transfer.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish. This means an student from the following experience levels can join this course:
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience.
Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium.
Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.
Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.All Levels

YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR OWN MATERIALS.
The Academy is a white spirit and turpentine free environment and only odourless spirits, such as Zest-it or Sansodor, are permitted on the premises. Students must provide their own spirits, which can be recycled for longevity.
We request that you bring 2 small jars (one with a lid, one without) to hold your spirit, and a few cloths rags for brush cleaning (such as an old cotton t-shirt).
Additional Costs
There will be a cost of £10 per student to cover acetates, spray paints, and some household paints, that the Academy will provide. This is payable at the start of the course.
Materials and equipment students need to provide
A good range of brushes – small to large.
Acrylic paints and Oil paints.
Any paints/paint products that the students have and may wish to experiment with; household paints, watercolour, thickening mediums etc.
Initial introduction materials and tools will be provided by the academy, subsequent materials will be sourced and/or paid for by students.
You will need to bring your own painting materials to the class. If you do not have your own materials, we recommend you order an Oil Painting Pack or Acrylic Painting Pack at the time of booking, which will be available when you arrive for your first class.

Certain materials can also be purchased from the Academy shop during shop hours. Please check in advance of your class if the item you require is available, as the Academy may not have this in stock.
Alison Hand is the BA Fine Art Programme Leader at Art Academy London. She has an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, and is currently the Artist in Residence with Kings College London Philosophy department exploring new research into dreams and wakeful consciousness. She is a published writer on art and architecture, the latest project being a 6,000 word article on contemporary drawing for Bloomsbury publishers. Hand’s paintings and drawings have won many awards including the Basil H Alkazzi Scholarship; the Gordon Luton Award for Fine Art; and the Stephenson Harwood Award.

Bankside Campus
Students are welcome to use The Hub during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food. You must bring your own keep-cup, water bottle or food container to the Academy as mugs, glasses, and containers will not be available in our Bankside campus.
Tea and coffee will be provided by the Academy and is available from the island unit at the end of The Hub.
