This immersive course is an introduction to the fundamentals of wheel throwing. Aimed at both beginners and those with some experience who want to practice their skills further, you will develop essential skills to shape mugs and bowls, gaining hands-on experience in forming, refining, and glazing your own unique ceramic pieces.
Throughout the course, you will explore:
– Centring, opening, and pulling up walls to form pots (starting with 500g of clay per piece, working up to 600g – 800g)
– Shaping and refining cylinders, adding handles to create functional mugs
– Throwing bowls, learning to pull smooth, curved walls and experimenting with larger pieces of clay
– Neaten your work by trimming and refining
– Glazing and decoration by applying colour and texture
Sessions are held in our new, well-equipped Ceramics studio, guided by an experienced tutor. This is a fun environment where an exploratory approach is encouraged. It is a very messy activity, so please wear old clothes and cut your nails short.
This course includes having 8 of your best pieces fired which can be collected shortly after the course is complete. Learning to use the wheel proficiently is a physical skill which takes time to build. This course will provide a strong foundation in your wheel throwing journey.
