This course is the perfect introduction to the fundamental skills of using the pottery wheel and making your own ceramics. This fun and relaxed course is ideal for those who are beginners or have some experience and want to practice their core skills.
Over ten weeks you will create a series of pots that will help you cover the core skills of wheel throwing which includes centring, and opening and pulling a small lump of clay (400-500g of clay per pot). You will neaten your pots through a process called trimming, then glaze your them using brush-on glazes. The course includes having six of your best pots fired for you to glaze, which can be collected after the course is complete.
Sessions are held in our new purpose built Ceramics studio! It is a very messy activity, so please wear old clothes and cut your nails short.
Learning to use the wheel proficiently takes a lot of time – it’s a physical skill and takes time to build, but this course will give you a good foundation in your wheel throwing journey.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner
All materials will be provided for this course, please wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy. Please also bring an old tea towel for your hands whilst throwing.
