Designed for beginners and those looking to develop their skills, this course explores pinching, coiling, and decorative techniques to craft your own functional ceramic plant pots. Sessions are held in our new, well-equipped Ceramics studio, guided by an experienced tutor. Through demonstrations and hands-on experience, you’ll experiment with form, texture, and colour.
Throughout the course, you will learn:
– Pinching: Learn to create small, organic forms for mini plant pots
– Coiling: Build height and shape to construct a medium-sized planter (up to 20cm)
– Refining Techniques: Smooth and neaten surfaces for a professional finish
– Mark Making & Slip Decoration: Experiment with textures and add colour
This is a fun environment where an exploratory approach is encouraged. As the course progresses, you will deepen your understanding of the material, build confidence when experimenting with decorative techniques, and create a unique piece of work that can be fired by the tutor, ready to collect shortly after the course finishes.
Afterwards, you may be interested in alternative ceramic courses we offer at the Academy such as Beginners Wheel Throwing.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner

Katie is an artist living and working in East London. Each of her creative outputs embody an aesthetic which is colourful and playful. During her ceramics studies, she intended to bring together her love of clay and illustration. Her research centred around the theme of the theatre, imagining her clay objects as theatre props which she paints and directs on stage.
She builds multiple works at once, coil by coil in her chosen clay body. She finds the building process the most freeing time of her practice, following no specific plans and embracing a variation of forms. The clay surface she paints with underglazes and slips.
Katie’s designs are inspired by theatre sets and her natural surroundings. Decorating her objects she describes as an ongoing experiment.
