Designed for those looking to explore the creative potential of hand-building ceramics, this course is an introduction to the methods of pinching and coiling to build vases. Sessions are held in our new, well-equipped Ceramics studio, guided by an experienced tutor. This is a fun environment where an exploratory approach is encouraged.
Throughout the course, you will learn:
– Pinching and coiling techniques to shape and build vase forms
– Methods for refining surfaces, smoothing, and perfecting shapes
– Creative mark-making and slip decoration to add texture and colour
– Experimenting with decorative handles and exploring different vase styles
As the course progresses, you will deepen your understanding of the material, build confidence when experimenting with decorative techniques, and create a unique piece of work that can be fired and clear glazed by the tutor, ready to collect shortly after the course finishes.
Afterwards, you may be interested in alternative ceramic courses we offer at the Academy such as Beginners Wheel Throwing.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner

Daisy Cooper is a ceramicist who predominantly creates hand built tableware and vases.
Her style is organic and free flowing. Starting most forms from a pinch pot and building up using slab methods, taking inspiration from nature’s landscapes to inspire forms and textures.
Daisy uses colourful high fire glazes to express and explore playful ways to interpret nature’s colour palettes onto functional tableware for the home.
