This course is designed for students who have either completed our Beginners Plus course or already have some experience of drawing and want to take their skills to the next level. Throughout the course, students will work from observation, memory and imagination, and look at a variety of references to develop a deeper understanding of the possibilities of drawing. The course includes a variety of subjects including still life, drawing from a model, and urban landscape.

Students will enhance their range of drawing skills and develop their ‘visual vocabulary’ by looking at the following topics:`

  • Using still life to explore composition, mark-making and accuracy
  • Drawing from a life model to better evaluate tone and consider measurement, shape and line
  • Using colour to convey mood or feeling
  • Exploration of portraiture, including self-portraits, and the clothed figure
  • Working with memory to master visualisation
  • Using perspective to communicate spatial configurations
  • Exploring Borough Market to capture energy and movement in outdoor spaces

In the final two weeks, students will spend their time creating a longer, narrative figure drawing working from a model and with the opportunity to build on aspects of the course from previous weeks.   This course aims to grow your confidence and inspire you to tackle more complex drawing scenarios and to experiment with ambitious drawings.

Intermediate

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy. These courses tend to be less structured and instead are tailored to the classes’ needs and the direction they want to advance in. Choose an Intermediate course if you are looking to improve your skills and have more critical discussions around the work you produce.

You will need to bring your own drawing materials to the class, which you can store at The Art Academy for the duration of the course. If you do not have your own materials, we recommend you order the Pack, below, at the time of booking, which will be available when you arrive for your first class. There is also a mini shop in the Academy that supplies the basics such as pencils, sketchbooks, putty rubbers etc. (card purchases only).

Please also bring an apron or old clothing to wear.

    The Drawing Pack contains:
  • One set of lead pencils (2B, 4B, 6B)
