This is a fun, day-long taster course in drawing for those who may be considering a longer evening or daytime course and would like to try it first.
Aimed at all levels of experience, this course offers a wonderful opportunity to try out a variety of drawing techniques and materials. Over the day, students will be introduced to fundamental drawings skills, including gestural drawing, mark-making, measurement and tonal drawing. Alongside this, students will test out more creative techniques such as drawing with charcoal, rubbers, chalk and ink. This is an intensive, informative, and fun day, which introduces observational drawing skills, creative techniques, and offers students the opportunity to be more experimental by combining media in the afternoon.
Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in practical demonstrations to help you begin to see shape and tone, and how these elements can relate together to form a composition. We aim to foster self-certainty and the enjoyment of drawing in a relaxed yet stimulating environment.
As you work through a series of exercises, you will gain confidence with pencil and charcoal, which will encourage you to further explore the medium. Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in practical demonstrations to enable students to really understand the skills, materials, and techniques introduced.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner
All of the materials are supplied for this one day class. Wearing an old shirt or apron would be advantageous.
ELEANOR BEDLOW
Eleanor develops precarious and fragile forms through drawing, painting and sculpture. Neither human stand-ins or alien forms, the structures in her work are suspended in balance not only in a physical sense, but also in their existence as inanimate anthropomorphic forms. The work questions the interconnection between personal identity and place. Eleanor spent her formative years in Japan before moving to London. She completed the Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School in 2008 and the Turps Art School’s Studio Programme in 2018.

We cannot store your bikes at the Academy, however there is on-street bike parking near our Mermaid Court site.
Students are welcome to use our Common Room during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food.
You are also welcome to make tea or coffee.

- You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment. Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.
Materials & Equipment
- If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be booked on our Materials Page or on this page when you book the course
- Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
- All artwork at the Academy MUST be taken home at the end of each session where possible, with the exception of oil paintings and sculpture works.
- We cannot store materials at the Academy, so please take these to and from your sessions.
- Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silent during the class.
- Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you a week before the start of your course.
