This one-day taster course is a great introduction for those wanting to explore the medium of oil painting. Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in hands-on, practical demonstrations to show you how to mix colour, see shape and tone, and relate these elements to form a composition. You will aim to create two paintings throughout the day.
The morning will be spent focusing on how to handle oil paint whilst working from a still-life set up using natural and organic forms, such as flowers or fruit. During the afternoon, students will be taken through detailed colour theory whilst painting a bright and colourful still life. Students will cover some fundamentals of oil painting involving:

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.Beginner
Gail’s paintings reflect her fascination with the urban landscape, figures and stories around her, and an interplay between structure and spontaneity, observation and re-imagining. She has exhibited across the capital and her work has been shortlisted for the inaugural Evening Standard Contemporary Painting Prize and the prestigious Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize and is held in private collections in the UK and internationally. Gail enjoys teaching in a variety of settings, encouraging and supporting students to develop their skills and style with a range of approaches and artistic references.
