This one-day taster course is a great introduction for those wanting to explore the medium of oil painting. Throughout the day the tutor will lead the class in hands-on, practical demonstrations to show you how to mix colour, see shape and tone, and relate these elements to form a composition.

You will aim to create two paintings throughout the day. The morning will be spent focusing on how to handle oil paint whilst working from a still-life set up using natural and organic forms, such as flowers or fruit. During the afternoon, students will be taken through detailed colour theory whilst painting a bright and colourful still life.

Students will cover some fundamentals of oil painting involving:

  • Colour mixing
  • Shape & Tone
  • Composition
  • Paint application

The course is led in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, perfect for first time painters.
If you enjoy this course, you can follow up with one of our Oil Painting for Beginners courses.

Beginner

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

All materials will be provided, please wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy.
