DAYS: 4

This is an introductory course where students will learn relief and intaglio printmaking, and explore the possibilities from both processes. You will develop the skills and knowledge to develop two print editions.
You will create a series of multicoloured reduction relief prints on linoleum with Japanese woodcut tools and a second intaglio series of etchings on zinc using a saline sulphate mordant.

Throughout this course you will learn:

  • The difference between relief and intaglio and the possibilities of both
  • How to design and draw your design onto a linoleum block for relief printmaking
  • How to design and draw an additional design onto aluminium plates using an etching needle
  • How to use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
  • Plan and stage your colour layers
  • How to use a professional printing press

This popular Printmaking for Beginners course is ideal for beginners or those with some experience, offering an in-depth introduction to printmaking. Once completed, we recommend signing up for one of our evening or weekend courses specialising in either etching or relief printmaking.

After completing this course, students will be given a free Open Access session to come back and use the print room, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills.

Beginner

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

All materials will be provided for this course.
