The Sculpting in Metal courses lets you explore the various practical processes involved in making metal sculptures. This course is an excellent opportunity to work on an individual project in a workshop with an experienced tutor. You will receive tailored guidance from your tutor, theoretical and technical assistance throughout the duration of the course. The course provides the required knowledge, practical skills, and Health and Safety guidance to work with welders, angle grinders and other specialist metal working machinery. You will gain the skills to develop your own sculpture, or series of sculptures within your practice. You will receive individual feedback on your work from the tutor.
The course is open to students who have no experience in metalwork, as well as those who wish to refine their skill set.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish. This means an student from the following experience levels can join this course:
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience.
Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium.
Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.
Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.All Levels

You must provide your own Flame Retardant overalls/clothing with long sleeves and steel toecap shoes. There are a number of shops that offer these online, we recommend the following:

Steel toecap shoes, PPE Work Solutions
You will not be able to use the workshop unless you wear the correct clothing and shoes, due to health and safety standards. You cannot buy these in the Academy, so please make sure that you get hold of these before your course. We will provide other necessary PPE such as welding masks and gloves.
You should also bring a sketchbook/notebook and pen/pencil to make notes and sketch ideas.
If you wish you can purchase materials on site: Our workshop provides steel in various different forms, available for purchase by the meter. For this course, you will be mostly using circular and square bars, but more options are available to purchase from the studio, so you don’t need to bring anything into the studio, unless you want to.
Nathan Murphy MRSS is a London based Sculptor and educator specialising in site-specific installation. As an artist member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, he has been selected for a number of residences, competitions and awards across the UK. Murphy’s work can be found in private and commercial collections. He studied BA(hons) Contemporary Art Practice at the University of Leeds furthering his education in Florence before completing an MA in Fine Art at Wimbledon college of Art, University of the Arts London.
Murphy’s work focuses on investigating the viewers’ experiences and perceptions of space. Works created employ constructed visual forms and environments that heighten or aim to enhance a visual and physical interaction.
The physical and optical nature of the work is acted upon with the choice of geometric minimal forms and fabricated materials; these are reflected upon with a need to engage and relate to the viewer through its human scale.

Students are welcome to use The Hub during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food. You must bring your own keep-cup, water bottle or food container to the Academy as mugs, glasses, and containers will not be available in our Bankside campus.
Tea and coffee will be provided by the Academy and is available from the island unit at the end of The Hub.
