Designed for beginners and those eager to further their knowledge, this course is an excellent opportunity to work on an individual project with an experienced tutor in a well-equipped workshop. With tailored guidance, theoretical, and technical assistance throughout, you will build essential skills in welding, metal shaping, and project planning. Balancing technical instruction with creative exploration, this course will guide you through:
You will gain foundational skills in Arc-MIG welding and metal preparation. This course will enable you to plan a project effectively, and provide time to execute this in the workshop. Expert instruction and personalised advice will build your confidence when using essential tools. By the end of the course, you may be inspired to pursue more advanced metal work or sculpture courses.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish. This means an student from the following experience levels can join this course:
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience.
Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium.
Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.
Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.All Levels

You must provide your own Flame Retardant overalls/clothing with long sleeves and steel toecap shoes. There are a number of shops that offer these online, we recommend the following:

You will not be able to use the workshop unless you wear the correct clothing and shoes, due to health and safety standards. You cannot buy these in the Academy, so please make sure that you get hold of these before your course. We will provide other necessary PPE such as welding masks and gloves.
You should also bring a sketchbook/notebook and pen/pencil to make notes and sketch ideas.
If you wish you can purchase materials on site: Our workshop provides steel in various different forms, available for purchase by the meter. For this course, you will be mostly using circular and square bars, but more options are available to purchase from the studio, so you don’t need to bring anything into the studio, unless you want to.
Julian Wild joined the Art Academy in 2016 and has over 20 years experience of teaching in HE and FE. He has held solo shows at Modern Art Oxford, William Benington Gallery, Maddox Arts, Canary Wharf and Burghley House and taken part in group exhibitions such as Sculpture in The City and in Beyond Limits at Chatsworth House. His work has been commissioned by Cass Sculpture Foundation, Fidelity Investments & Oxford University. In 2005 he was a finalist for The Jerwood Sculpture Prize and in 2009-12 was the recipient of The RBKC/Chelsea Arts Club Trust Studio Bursary. He was vice-President of The Royal Society of Sculptors 2015-19.

Students are welcome to use The Hub during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food. You must bring your own keep-cup, water bottle or food container to the Academy as mugs, glasses, and containers will not be available in our Bankside campus.
Tea and coffee will be provided by the Academy and is available from the island unit at the end of The Hub.
