An ideal start point for those wishing to explore sculpture techniques and ideas.

This course covers both foundation technical skills and a creative exploration of different materials and ways of working. Sculpture is wonderfully fun and creative and with some simple skills taught, great results can be achieved.

The first half of the term comprises two weeks of figurative sculpture in clay with a life model and two weeks of portraiture with another life model, also in clay. The second half of the term is an introduction to plaster, wire and other materials, culminating in a personal project. Students leave the course with a strong foundation of sculpture skills as well as an individual approach to the practice.

Beginner

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Students spend time learning the very basics of the taught medium, for example, how to mix colours, use different tools, set up an easel. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience, they tend to follow a more structured path than our other courses, ensuring each student receives the guidance they need from the tutor.

Please bring old clothes as you may get messy

Most equipment and materials are provided but depending on your chosen creative approach in the latter part of the course, you may need to source some materials yourself, also bring your own sketchbook if you have one.

If you work in clay without an armature, you will be offered the opportunity to have your clay pieces fired. Hollowing is necessary before a piece can be fired. This is optional and additional hollowing and firing costs will apply.

Hollowing Fees

£15 for a small figure; £20 for a portrait head; £20 for a large figure

Firing Fees

£15 for a small figure; £20 for a portrait head; £20 for a large figure

If you are using metal wire there may be an additional charge. The cost will depend on the amount of wire used.

The Hollowing and Firing process takes at least 6-8 weeks.  Make sure that you take a photograph of your work for identification. You will be informed by email when your sculpture is ready to be picked up.

ANTHONY WATERS (Sessions 1,2 & 4)

Anthony Waters has a diploma in sculpture from Heatherley’s College and in 2016 graduated from the Art Academy Certificate programme. Previous to this he worked as a graphic designer and seeks to make work which crosses the boundaries between 2D & 3D, figurative and abstract, exploring materiality and the processes involved in producing sculptural work. He won the prize for best non-member newcomer for the FACE exhibition, Society of Portrait Sculptors in 2016 and was a joint winner of the Surrey Sculpture prize the same year.

FARNOUSH AMINI MRSS (Sessions 3 & Sessions 5-8)

Farnoush was born in Iran. She lives and works in London. She graduated from the Art Academy London in July 2019. Exploring material language, their connection or disconnection and their relativity to her chosen concept is her main focus. She somehow extracts the most relevant material, symbol or gesture from her chosen subject. Her work has been influenced by Iran’s revolution, war, religion and politics. Her practice consists of installation and performance art. She explores material such as: human hair, fabric, feather, metal, clay, concrete, ice, tarmac and read-made objects. By placing the familiar object in an unfamiliar form or space she overwhelms the viewer with an uneasy feeling. She has been exhibiting in various galleries in London since 2017. In 2018 she won the “People’s Choice Award” by Passion for Freedom Art Festival at the La Galleria Pall Mall and The Royal Opera Arcade Galleries in London. In 2019 she was shortlisted and won the Sheroes Revoluciones Art Prize by Lon-art Creative in London. In 2020 she was elected as a member of Royal Society of Sculptors and was given the title MRSS. She was also selected to exhibit at the Nauvele Vague gallery in Marbella, Spain in the same year. In 2021 she has had her first solo exhibition by Nauvelle Vague Artspace at the Patioo Mono-Room in Cadiz, Spain. In 2021 for the second time she was the prize winner of the Sheros Revoluciones exhibition by Lon-art Creatives funded by the British Art Council.
