This Young Artist’s course in drawing, painting and sculpting the figure is an exciting five-day course for ages 15 – 17 providing high level art tuition, including drawing workshops, contemporary painting, specialist sculpture techniques, and using experimental media.

Focused classes create a supportive environment, and there is a strong focus on personal outcomes and solutions to develop independent judgement. Access to specialist materials and facilities improve technical skills, and discussion and presentation sessions build confidence and critical understanding. 

During this course we’ll cover:

  • How to use a range of drawing techniques and experiment with materials such as charcoal and chalk
  • Key skills for painting the figure, how to plan the composition, mix colour, approach the body and depict volume
  • Using mixed media and collage, understanding abstract approaches
  • Learning new sculptural techniques such as clay figure sculpture
  • Taking an artwork through from concept to completion, and discussing and presenting ideas and artworks

This course is ideal for those studying a range of arts based subjects, or wanting to advance their artistic skills and creative confidence.

 

Our Young Artist courses have three booking options for UK Residents, International students and a limited number of scholarship spaces for Free School Meal recipients.

Young Artist 15-17

This course is suitable for students between the ages of 15 to 17 only, and is open to all skill levels.

Please bring old clothes and two jam jars or containers for water.  Please also bring a camera/phone to photo document your work.

Preparation for the Personal Project day: students should bring in a range of images of a place, object, or concept, that excites and inspires them, to help develop their personal project.

Materials, including clay, are included in the cost of the course. You will be offered the opportunity to have your clay pieces fired. Hollowing-out is necessary before a piece can be fired. This is optional and additional hollowing and firing costs will apply.

Firing Fees:

JESS ROUTLEY (DAYS 1 & 2)

Jess is a painter and printmaker who is primarily concerned with themes of marginalised identity and representation. Prior to completing her degree in Contemporary Portraiture at Art Academy London, she studied Politics and Community Development. Her art practice is socially informed and wholly influenced by her own identity. Her works have been shown across London, including at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Show.  

FARNOUSH AMINI MRSS (DAYS 3-5)

Farnoush is an Iranian artist who lives and works in London. She graduated from the Art Academy London in 2019. She aims to question the divisions created by religion, politics and cultural differences. Exploring material language and connections to her chosen subject are her main focus. She extensively researches her ideas through documentary footage, articles and photos. Her works have been exhibited internationally. She is a twice winner of Sheros Revoluciones in 2019/2020 and People’s Choice Award in 2019 by Passion For Freedom Art Festival. She was elected as a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors in 2020.

Please note that London Bridge has two exits, the most direct route is to follow signs to “Borough Market”.

Students are welcome to use The Hub during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food. You must bring your own keep-cup, water bottle or food container to the Academy as mugs, glasses, and containers will not be available in our Bankside campus.

Tea and coffee will be provided by the Academy and is available from the island unit at the end of The Hub.

Terms and Conditions

  • By booking onto one of our courses you agree to our Short Courses Terms and Conditions.
  • You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment. Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.

Materials & Equipment

  • If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be booked on our Materials Page or on this page when you book the course
  • Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
  • All artwork at the Academy MUST be taken home at the end of each session where possible, with the exception of oil paintings and sculpture works.
  • We cannot store materials at the Academy, so please take these to and from your sessions.
  • Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silent during the class.
  • Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you a week before the start of your course.
