During this course students will use traditional and digital techniques to create pages for comics and graphic novels, including character design and development, visual storytelling, colouring and lettering. By the end of the course, they will have produced at least two full-colour pages of comic-strip art.

This course is suitable for students between the ages of 15 to 17 only, and is open to all skill levels.

We recommend bringing ideas for your comics to the first session.
Students are advised to bring an external hard drive/ USB memory stick with them to backup their work. Though there will be the possibility of storing files on the computers we cannot take responsibility for the safekeeping of these files.
Please bring your own headphones/earphones and a sketchbook/ notepad to jot down ideas and/or take notes.
** Please note all our computers in the Digital Suite are Mac’s and therefore run the macOS operating system, they also all exclusively run Adobe CC 2017 software.**
If any students already have access to a iPad, or similar device, that they would be using after the course for their creations, they are encouraged to bring them along.
Chris Geary is the creator of International Aces, a series of Graphic Novels about the true life stories of the top pilots from the First World War. Chris is also a co-writer and artist of Commitment, the award winning Graphic Novel about managing risk and has also contributed a variety of stories to Aces Weekly – an online anthology published by David Lloyd. Chris spent time at the London Cartoon Centre under the tutelage of David Lloyd.
Alison Hand holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art and is a published writer on art and architecture. She has exhibited in Germany, Hong Kong, London, and across the UK. Her work has won numerous awards including the Basil H Alkazzi Scholarship; the Gordon Luton Award for Fine Art; and the Stephenson Harwood Award.

We cannot store your bikes at the Academy, however there is on-street bike parking near our Mermaid Court site.
