The course focuses on the uniqueness on manga style, such as how to make pages look exciting and attractive within the limitation of monochrome and how to express the character’s emotions effectively. At the same time, it includes the very important basic skills like figure drawing. The students are encouraged to use traditional approach to ‘draw and plan’ pages and to finalise their work in digital form. The aim of the course is to make sure that all the students feel more confident creating manga illustrations and to complete at least two pages of manga style art.

Young Artist 15-17

This course is suitable for students between the ages of 15 to 17 only, and is open to all skill levels.

This course is open to all skill levels for students aged between 15 and 17. An ideal course for students who love art and wish to advance both their artistic skills and confidence, or are new to the subject and want a fun and engaging introduction

Students are advised to bring a Sketchbook, pencils, eraser and black and white pens that they are comfortable to work with, A4 paper folder, and a USB memory stick with them to backup their work. Though there will be the possibility of storing files on the computers we cannot take responsibility for the safekeeping of these files.

KUTSUWADA CHIE

Born and brought up in Japan, she graduated from the printmaking department of the Royal College of Art, London, and is now working as a professional manga artist. Her work Moonlight (2008, collected in The Mammoth Book of Best New Manga 3 by Constable & Robinson) was shortlisted in the Manga Jiman competition organised by the Japanese Embassy in the UK. One of her latest projects is a series of illustrated columns for Mainichi Weekly (published every two months by one of the major Japanese newspaper companies) about life and culture in UK. Her books are available in most English-speaking countries and Japan, and some are translated into Turkish, French, Italian and Spanish. Besides creating manga comics, she runs manga workshops at schools, libraries, and museums, such as the British Museum, the British Library, Welcome Collection and Victoria and Albert Museum. She has also worked on projects for UK Japanese Embassy, Channel 4 and CNN.

We cannot store your bikes at the Academy, however there is on-street bike parking near our Mermaid Court site.

Students are welcome to use our Common Room/ The Barn during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food.

You are also welcome to make tea or coffee.

Materials & Equipment

  • If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be booked on our Materials Page or on this page when you book the course
  • Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
  • All artwork at the Academy MUST be taken home at the end of the course or it will be disposed of.
  • Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silent during the class.
  • Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you a week before the start of your course.
