It is an opportunity to develop your own personal painting style and create paintings with real meaning to you as well as exploring the medium of paint and understanding it's potential. The tutor will lead you to draw on inspiration from many other artists’ work and will guide you step by step through the stages of developing your own artwork. The course will cover exciting topics and exercises such as: - Line and tone - Colour and imagination - Application of paint - Painting from photographs - Painting a still life - Painting the figure using a life model - Composition and abstraction The tutor will lead a mind map exercise, to encourage students to create their own personal painting project. By exploring other artists’ works for inspiration, there will be time for discussion and trying out different techniques in your work. You will spend time in the last few weeks developing a finished painting, and building on the new skills you have acquired from the course. This course would be perfect for someone new to painting, or a beginner with some experience looking to explore different styles. There are several appropriate follow on courses including Painting the Figure, Abstract Painting and Painting Outdoors, depending on your area of interest.

This well structured course will teach students how to accurately paint a portrait, and the different techniques involved. The emphasis will be on learning to see form and colour accurately, using a life model, and applying these skills to better create loose, expressive portraits. The course will cover: - Proportion and the structure of the head - Tonal studies in monochrome - Introduction to using colour - Applying paint using a palette knife - Contrasting and bright backgrounds Starting with drawing, students will be taught proportion and how to structure the head. Following on, you will be working with oil paints and develop a series of artworks from short expressive painting sketches, to longer more detailed pieces. As the weeks progress you will also have the option to paint more of the figure if preferred. The class has the benefit of an experienced model every week as well as tuition from a talented professional artist. Over the course, students will explore: - Drawing from observation - Memory and imagination - Rhythm and movemenent You will develop a deeper understanding of the drawing process and have time to enhance your drawing skills. Each week focusses on a particular aspect of drawing. Students will explore measurement and gain confidence in drawing a wide variety of subjects including still life, life models, and urban landscapes. Through using different approaches and materials, students will begin to develop a ‘visual vocabulary’ of drawing. You will develop ways to communicate texture, weight, material and surface in your work. There will be opportunities to work both inside and outside the studio, and in museums and galleries. Working outside of the studio will teach students how to capture movement and figures in space, feeding off the energy of the environment around them. Students will work outside in the 'real world', and experience how this produces a different kind of energy in their drawings.
