Develop art skills alongside Degree Students

Enhance Your Art Skills Alongside Degree Students

Are you looking to develop art skills and take them to the next level?

The Art Academy offers a unique opportunity to do just that with our Elective Skills Workshop courses. These part-time, daytime courses are designed to immerse you in a creative environment where you study alongside our BA Fine Art students. Beginning in the second week of September, these 10-week workshops provide an enriching experience that blends technical skill-building with the vibrant energy of a degree-level art studio.

What Makes the Elective Skills Workshops Unique?

The Elective Skills Workshop courses stand out because they are also an integral part of our BA Fine Art degree programme. This means you’ll be learning in the same studios, under the same expert guidance, and with the same access to resources as our full-time degree students. It’s a rare opportunity to benefit from the rigorous standards of a fine art degree programme without committing to a full-time course.

By enrolling in these workshops, you’ll have the chance to:

  • Learn from Expert Tutors: Our courses are taught by practising artists who bring a wealth of real-world experience to their teaching.
  • Engage in Peer Learning: Study alongside BA Fine Art students, engaging in collaborative learning that broadens your perspective and inspires your practice.
  • Access High-Quality Facilities: Utilise the same state-of-the-art facilities as our degree students, giving you the tools you need to fully explore your creative potential.

Develop Art Skills

Here are just a few of the incredible courses available this term:

Investigating colour as form will enable you to think about colour theory, develop art skills and explore a synthesis of processes, structure and surface. You will be encouraged to consider how you develop a composition, specificity of colour choice and how you handle paint. You will be encouraged to experiment with the interaction of colour throughout the course – its fluidity, chromatic value, scale and dynamic juxtapositions – developing a colour palette and vocabulary suitable to your individual practice and approach.

Contemporary Painting: Responding to Images of the Body

Using a range of contemporary source materials, such as digital images, the moving image and images from social media, you’ll consider and explore how artists re-work, subvert and re-contextualise existing images, develop art skills and see how this impacts on the representation of the contemporary body in painting.

Figurative Sculpture

Studying directly from a life model, you’ll sculpt the full figure on a half-life scale in clay. You’ll learn the essentials of construction, develop art skills including various techniques in observation, measurement and use of a plumb line, and will combine these modelling skills with fundamental anatomical knowledge. You’ll also gain an understanding of the importance of capturing gesture and proportion.

These courses are just the beginning. The Elective Skills Workshop course curriculum offers a diverse range of subjects, allowing you to tailor your learning experience to your interests and goals.
