This brand new Printmaking Mix course is ideal for students who are new to the Print Room. You will be guided by 3 different experienced printmakers throughout the course and be shown 4 separate printmaking techniques:

Monoprint
Etching
Lino Cut
Collagraph

Throughout this course you will learn:

  • How to create unique monoprints
  • How to design, draw out and cut a linoleum block for relief printmaking
  • How to draw and etch a design onto a zinc plate using an etching needle
  • How to design, plan and print a Collagraph plate using a variety of materials
  • How to use a variety of specialist printmaking equipment and materials
  • How to use a professional printing press
  • The possibilities of four different printmaking techniques

The studio is a low-​toxic environment with dedicated printmaking facilities for professional hands-on learning.

This popular Printmaking for Beginners course is ideal for beginners or those with some experience, offering an in­-depth introduction to printmaking. Once completed, we recommend signing up to one of our evening or weekend courses specialising in a process of your choice. Open Access runs on Wednesday evenings and Saturday during the day, giving you the opportunity to further develop your printmaking skills. After completing this course students will be given a free Open Access session.

All Levels

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.

This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish. This means an student from the following experience levels can join this course:

Beginner

Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience.

Beginner +

Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium.

Intermediate

Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.

Advanced

Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.

All materials will be provided for this course. We do recommend wearing appropriate clothing you don’t mind getting messy.

USVA INEI (Sessions 1 & 2)

Usva Inei is a queer, non-binary visual artist, mainly working with topics of lived experiences of immigration and queerness. They primarily work through mixed media installations, with painting and printmaking being central elements of their practice. Usva’s work is critical, political, and feminist, exploring such themes, as identity politics, acculturation, normative structures, and the role of physical space in directing behaviour. In addition to exhibiting their artwork, Usva regularly teaches both on academic and artistic courses, runs various art-based workshops with museums and charities, and is engaged in academic, art-based research. Usva is a Finnish-born Russian immigrant, currently based in London, UK.

STELLA YARROW (Sessions 3 & 4)

Stella is an artist printmaker focusing on the interrelationship between society and ecological systems. Her work celebrates nature, responds to the climate and ecological emergency, and proposes new possibilities for sustainable coexistence with the natural world. She specialises in lino cut, with its clear strong graphic qualities, and the innovative technique of etched lino, with its expressive and loose mark making. She has exhibited her prints in London and elsewhere in the UK. She teaches printmaking part-time at the Art Academy and is a Print Associate with the Art Academy Print Studio.

Nearest Tube/ Rail: London Bridge or Borough (both a 5 minute walk).

Please note that London Bridge has two exits, the most direct route is to follow signs to “Borough High Street”.

We cannot store your bikes at the Academy, however there is on-street bike parking near our Mermaid Court site.

Students are welcome to use our Common Room/ The Barn during break times, where you can prepare hot drinks and/or food.

You are also welcome to make tea or coffee.

  • By booking onto one of our courses you agree to our Short Courses Terms and Conditions.
  • You will need to have paid in full before the first session of your class. Your place is not guaranteed until we have received full payment. Please book early in order to guarantee your place on the course.

Materials & Equipment

  • If you purchased a pack online this will be given to you on the first session of your course upon your arrival. Packs can be booked on our Materials Page or on this page when you book the course
  • Please don’t wear your best clothes as there is always a chance you will get messy. If possible bring an apron or overalls.
  • All artwork at the Academy MUST be taken home at the end of the course or it will be disposed of.
  • Please ensure that your mobile phone is switched off or is on silent during the class.
  • Health and Safety Guidelines will be provided to you a week before the start of your course.
