This course focuses on form and colour through multi-plate and reduction relief printmaking; a traditional and immediate sculptural approach to print using professional Japanese woodcut tools. This course is ideal for developing your colour skills, learning how to apply multiple colour combinations to wood and linoleum blocks to expand your printmaking knowledge and develop a self-led project.
Processes will be demonstrated week by week. Your tutor will support you fully throughout the course in both group sessions and one-to-one, providing regular feedback, critique and constructive advice. Although the course has a general theme and approach there is no fixed or prescriptive methodology and individuals are encouraged to blend their own approaches with the methodologies taught on this course.

All attendees must be aged 18 and over.
This course is suitable for all levels. Students can move at their own pace depending on their experience, with as much support from the Tutor as they wish. This means an student from the following experience levels can join this course:
Choose a Beginners course if you are looking for a broad introduction to the medium you are studying. Our Beginner courses are suitable for students with no prior experience.
Choose a Beginner + course if you are looking to hone your skills, focus on a specific subject area and build your confidence. These courses are suitable for those with some basic skills in and knowledge of the taught medium.
Our Intermediate courses are suitable for students who have considerable prior knowledge of the taught medium or have completed a Beginners/Beginners + course with the Art Academy.
Choose our Advanced courses if you have considerable knowledge in the taught medium. You are expected to be able to work independently and have critical discussions around your work.All Levels

YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN MATERIALS.
Materials for this course must be paid for, including plates, paper, inks, chemicals, grounds and various sundries. The basic materials cost for the course is £40 per student, payable at the start of the course. The tutor will advise on extra costs depending upon how many plates you create.
Carol Wilhide Justin is a graduate of the RCA and specialises in relief printmaking processes, specifically Japanese woodcut, exhibiting widely in London and internationally. Her work is held in many print collections including V&A, RCA and Clifford Chance. She lectures countrywide for the Art Society and has written a book for the Crowood Press “Japanese Woodcut: Traditional Techniques and Contemporary Practice”. She has been a tutor at The Art Academy since 2018.
